During the Tang and Song dynasties, the most popular utensils of tea were tea-bowls. In the Tang Dynasty, among all the mentioned tea-bowls, Xing (Hsing) and Yue (Yueh) tea wares were mostly admired. Xing tea wares were produced in the current Hebei province; meanwhile, Yue tea wares were made in South China. Gu Kuang (? 725-? 814), the author of Cha Fu (The Rhapsody of Tea) compared the Yue wares with jade; Lu Yu, who favored Yueh ware above Xing ware, compared Xing ware with silver. The metaphors of jade and silver suggest that Xing and Yue tea wares have different colors.
