Technology in Psychiatry Evolution. Development. Advancement. Progression. These words may bring many ideas into one’s mind, however in this case the idea is technology. Many think of technology as something electronic, however technology was first seen hundreds of years ago when the first civilizations began being built. From the construction of simple tools to the steam engine to things such as vaccinations and pills, technology has impacted the lives of humans in many ways. In the sense of technological advances in the field of medicine, there have been life-changing discoveries that the world simply would not be the same without. Many of times this is done by the creation of a new technology to take the place of a human task so it will not have to be completed anymore. In psychiatry, the main technology that fulfills this role is called Telepsychiatry. As described by Iris Telehealth, “Telepsychiatry describes a mental health clinician and patient meeting in real-time using secure video conferencing technology to allow for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions.” It sounds extremely simple and this concept has spread through many other medical fields and tend to greatly improve the virtual medical services. These telecommunication technologies have reduced the amount of human effort that must be put in and allows for the doctor to deliver a diagnose faster than ever before. In telepsychiatry, many of the companies that provide this service are looking to serve underdeveloped communities with access to some of the best mental health physicians in the world. Many are skeptical of these services because they are done electronically, however many also believe that they are incredibly similar to receiving care in person. There are many studies being done to show the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses that are done electronically. One particular study found that with individuals that have very common diagnoses in this field, such as depression and alcohol dependence the amount of reliability was almost identical whether it was done via telecommunication or in person
