Margaret Dorsey, author of the journal article, Borderland Music as Symbolic Forms of Nationalisms: The Best of the Texas Tornados, Partners, and ¡Viva Luckenbach!, has described the origin of borderland music, in this case, Tejano music as, “Borderland music is an expressive form affiliated with Anglo and Mexicano on both sides of the U.S. border” (Dorsey, 23). In other words, Dorsey asserts that Tejano music is much more complex than simply saying that it combines American and Mexican culture into one and makes it music. “I explore borderland music as a nexus for interpreting issues of Mexicano and Anglo identity formation” (23). Rather she is saying that it combines the ethnicities and the musical characteristics of each to make a statement about identities. Dorsey, happens to be a feminist, thus, viewing Tejano music through a feminist perspective and declaring that there is a complexity when combining national identity from different cultures into a music genre.

Before coming to Full Sail University, I had encountered many obstacles. One in particular placed so much doubt inside my mind and made me question if this was what I truly wanted to do, or who I wanted to become. Should I leave my family that is grieving over our loved one or do I follow my dreams that my grandmother wanted me to do? This was the hardest decision of my life, and I was torn in two each day that passed I know that both of you have doubts about this career choice, because you don’t see what it does and can do for me. What I’ve faced is similar to her, yet different as well this female artist started at the bottom and slowly worked her way to the top.

The Philippines has always had a rich musical history. It takes its roots from the indigenous tribes of the Philippines, who used it as a way to pass on epics and stories about gods and heroes, a way to celebrate good harvests, festivals, weddings and births, a way to mourn the dead, to court women, and a way to praise the gods. This music was then enriched by the Philippines’ western colonizers. The Spaniards imparted the zarzuela (called sarswela in the Philippines) and the rondalla, adding more Spanish touches to Filipino folk songs. The Americans, on the other hand, influenced the Philippine music scene by introducing pop and rock, eventually leading to the creation of “Pinoy pop”, which included a wide variety of forms like dance tunes, ballads, rock n’ roll, disco, jazz, and rap.
