Selena Quintanilla Perez was an idol in the Mexican American world. She was an empowering and was about to become for famous in the United States but was tragically shot before it could happen. The person who was accused of First-Degree murder was a woman called Yolanda Saldivar. Saldivar is the founder and president of the Selena Fan club and the manager of one of Selena’s boutiques. In early March of 1995, there was a meeting between Selena, Saldivar, and Selena’s family about a money situation.
Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta was born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico. Huerta is an American labor leader, civil rights activists, and was the co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association. Huerta’s father, Juan Fernandez, was a miner and a farm worker and later became the State Assemblyman of New Mexico. At an early age her parents divorced. Huerta lived most of her years with her mother, Alicia Chavez, and two brothers in Stockton, California.
Selena also married her guitarist Chris Pérez who she was happily in love with and was proud to let everyone around her know that as well. Sad to say she was killed by her fan page co-founder Yolanda Saldívar after Selena confronted her about stealing money from her boutique on March 31, 1995. At that time George W. Bush was the governor of Texas and announced that on Selena's birthday would be celebrated yearly in Texas as a remembrance of her and as a great person. Selena graduated from the american school of correspondence and got enrolled at the pacific western university, at the age 17. In 1984, she recorded her first LP record which was the name of the band. The compositions belonged to the Tejano music which was a male dominated genre. Apparently Yolanda was stealing money from Selena’s fan club and was trying to hide it. Selena’s father, Abraham, informs Selena about this and they confront Yolanda together. Obviously Yolanda wouldn 't admit to it right away. In a panic, knowing that she was found, Yolanda met with Selena and ended up shooting her in the back. The accident became fatal and Selena passed away.
Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a talented Mexican-American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, and fashion designer. On top of her career, she had respect, and was admired as a great role model by Mexican Americans. The “Queen of Tejano” music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the “Top Latin Artist of the 90s” and then “Best Selling Latin Artist of the decade”. Selena ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market.
Selena, quite commonly known as “Queen of Tejano”, left many fans devastated with her assassination in the mid 90’s. Her singing career started at the age of ten when her father, a former musician, produced and managed a band consisting of Selena and her siblings. From this age on, with a many setbacks, Selena’s music became popularly known across the country and in Mexico as well. Among her singing talent she was also an entrepreneur, having her own boutique and salon in Corpus Christi, Texas by the age of 22. Selena’s determination to be so successful and stand out in a country that did not always accept her, only for her life to be taken at the culmination of her career, had a great impact on Mexican-American music and will always be remembered.

Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.
Can you imagine how much courage and strength it takes to fight your way through a world where being a Tejano singer as a woman is unfathomable? Selena Quintanilla did just that, struggling through her hero’s journey fighting sexism, discrimination, and camouflaged betrayal to rise to stardom and persevere, paving a path of hope for the millions of women she inspired and becoming a beacon in the evolution of the female industry. Selena’s Ordinary world was with her family in her hometown of Lake Jackson, Texas right next to Houston where she was born on April 16, 1971 to her parents, Abraham Jr. and Marcella Quintanilla (“Selena Biography - life, family, children, parents, story, death, school, old, information, born, movie”). Whitney was in a new musical film called “Sparkle”, starring Jordin Sparks. Whitney was approached to become a x-factor judge, but Whitney did live long enough to become a judge. Whitney died on February 11, 2012 at the age of 48. Whitney was in Los Angeles for a grammy party, that she was going to sing at the night she died. She was staying in Beverly Hilton Hotel.
With these achievements, this made Selena the first women to achieve huge success in Tejano and the first Tejano artist to win a Grammy award and have albums go gold. After achieving so much success in Tejano music Selena wanted to crossover to American music. She started recording the album “Dreaming of you” but sadly she did live to see her album success. Selena was murder on March 31, 1995. Even though Selena died the album “Dreaming of you” was released.
Selena desperately wanted to record an album in her first language, so in December of 1993 she was moved to a record company that made English language songs. On March 31st, 1995 she was shot and killed by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar. This was a tragic day for many and she will forever be
