Is there a big difference between deception and revenge? The narrative story The Tell-Tale Heart was written by Edgar Alan Poe in 1843. The story is told by an unnamed narrator that doesn’t seem very reliable. The main characters in the story are the old man and the unnamed narrator. In the story the narrator loves the old man. Except for one thing. The old mans eye because it reminds the narrator of a vulture’s eye. So the narrator makes the decision to get rid of the eye at all costs. The result is deadly. Setting is used in the story to describe the scenery around the characters. One example is when the narrator is sneaking into the old mans apartment as the old man was sleeping. As the narrator is sneaking in his thumb slips and the door opens quickly. Making a loud noise and waking the old man up in a panic thinking that there’s an intruder. “I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang out of bed crying out— “Who’s there?”” (Poe 93).
