They established an administrative system that created rules, had officials watch over the villages to enforce rules/laws, things were regulated, etc. They changed tax and forced labor systems. They also redistributed land. This is significant because it shows how the Japanese government was able to benefit and organize their communities and establish laws. In Doc 1 written by the Roman historian, Florus in c.150 says that there should not be a war with slaves and men should not be forced to follow the rules of a cruel ruler.
Japan didn’t open to foreigners until the mid-19th century. Japan quickly realized the situation and began to modernize and westernize as fast as possible. Japan wanted to be strong enough to resist domination of western imperialists who wanted Japan for their own. Japan also wanted to become the strongest Asian country. Japan’s tactics of rapid modernization succeeded, and kept the country and government independent of foreign control.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries industrialization was a big thing in Japan. This industrialization had economic, political and social effects on Japan. According to document 1, “The Constitution of the Empire of Japan: The Meiji Constitution (1890-1947)one political change was a written constitution was formed. In 1868 this constitution was created to show how Japan is a capable of deserving respect while keeping their own power.
Secondly, Japanese people were willing to do anything to win the war like kamikaze attacks (Doc. C). “In these kamikaze attacks, more than 3,000 ruthless Japanese pilots were killed, and there were more than 7,000 casualties among American, Australian, and British personnel (OI/http://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/first-kamikaze-strikes). This quote shows just how much japan was willing to do.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi impacted Japanese government in many ways. He acknowledged that an unstable peace and constant uncertainly had led to the practice of samurai farming and peasants to take up arms. To combat this, he issued decrees that defined the social status and duties of all Japanese. He banned everyone from having weapons besides samurai. Samurai were ordered back to towns.
In 1938, Japan announced its plan to constitute a new order in East Asia (Doc C). In this new order, the rule of the Japanese emperor would be drawn-out over Earth. This was a driving force for Japan’s invasion because of their ambitious desires. By damaging an American naval base, it gave Japan the ability to also occupy China and Manchuria leading to a rise in their military power (Doc C). Japan’s presence in more of East Asia brought them one step closer to expanding their authority.
According to History.com [3], “Under the leadership of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, or Nazi Party, grew into a mass movement and ruled Germany through totalitarian means from 1933 to 1945.” So, during the time of WWII, in the Pacific theater, Nazism was the dominating political system. In Japan (Taisho and Early Showa Period [4]), “During the 1930s, the military established almost complete control over the government.” In the Pacific Theater, Japan was a Militaristic country, so the military controlled almost everything, while the Emperor was more of a figurehead, with little power. These two forms of government are very different.
The Japanese military still refused to give up their fight in World War II. Harry S. Truman was the President of the United States of America. These two countries had been fighting for four years, and Truman was pressed with a decision to use one of the most massive bombs known. The American forces had already invaded Okinawa, and Iwo Jima, but the Japanese military had over 2 million soldiers. Americans had asked Japan to surrender, and if they refused it would result in destruction.
Japan believed that the United States was a country that would interfere during the commencement of their “new order”, which lead them to an attempt to eliminate the US. The document from The Way of the Subjects states, “[a]n old order…(European and American)...are now crumbling” (Document A). Japan wants the given ability to be seen as a country that can be recognized as a world power that could have the ability to intimidate the old world order. The Emperor of Japan would be the leader that would be empowered of the “new order”, whose overall goal is to spread the ideals and beliefs of the Yamato race across the world (Document A). Continuing the commencement of Japan’s plan, they launched an attack on China and gained control of the country’s Eastern coast, as well as the an affair with Manchuria(Document B, C).
Proctor has some affection for Abigail but cares more for his wife than she. Betty lies, but Abigail is craftier than she. Abigail is manipulative, but Mercy Lewis is more cruel than her. Hirohito became emperor of Japan in 1926. The emperor had supreme authority over Japan, but some historians believe that Hirohito simply accepted the advice of Japanese ministers and military advisers. The role that Hirohito played in formulating Japan’s expansionist policies and in the Nanjing Massacre remains a debatable topic, and many historians have contradicting opinions on exactly how influential Hirohito was. For one, there is still controversy relating to Hirohito’s true role in political and military affairs. Some historians believe that Hirohito had limited influence over military and politics despite the political turmoil during his early reign.
Japan began its avid assimilation of Western civilization in 1800, this led to major changes in developments. Initially architecture styles from abroad were imported to japan for example, the buildings made of stones and bricks were built on the sites of the mansions of feudal lords and major roads were paved with round stones. In 1869 Japan build its first telecommunications line between Tokyo and Yokohama, this led to population increase in the area exceeding a million in 1870. Moreover, many industries stationed their business in the area, and provided raw materials conveniently to the people.
Imperialism in Japan Background: Japan prior to the Meiji restoration was ruled in a hierarchy very similar to other European countries. The hierarchy was that of lords, samurai and then peasants. The Japanese equivalent to a king at the time was a military dictator called a shogun. During this time the capital was Kyoto and the shogun was part of the Tokugawa clan. That is why this period is referred to as the Tokugawa Shogunate.
In this day and age we seem to come across one big question where is are next source of power going to come from and for lots of countries out there seem to becoming very dependent on nuclear reactors as a main power source maybe this is because of the high energy output it has or maybe it's because of the high high availability of uranium and plutonium that is needed as the main fuel source for the reactor or it could be a combination of both of these factors. Even though the use of these nuclear reactors as a main source of energy has its benefits, the dangers these nuclear reactors pose are still very great. Accident do occur at these power plants some are small and not so bad and others can be catastrophic and accidents are not the only
Most have seen the 2010 film, The King’s Speech, known for it’s numerous incidents preceding King George VI’s first wartime broadcast. Many knew of his anxiety and shame surrounding his speech impediment and usurping of the throne; however, this representation of historical rhetoric goes beyond another Colin Firth film. On September 3, 1939, King George VI of the United Kingdom gave an address to the nation and its citizen’s, describing the unfortunate involvement of it’s people in another war and why the nation was in such a state.
