INTRODUCTION
This paper fuses key characteristics of terrorism with key elements of a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy. Terrorism means the use of violence and threats to intimidate especially for political purposes (Webster, 1828) . Counterterrorism is explained by the United States of America as practices, tactics, techniques, and strategies that governments, militaries, police departments and corporations adopt in response to terrorist threats and/or acts, both real and imputed (Kolodkin, 2014). These agencies are put in place to secure lives of civilians as it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that there is no civil unrest. This essay will thoroughly analyze characteristics of terrorism, cases of terrorism and merge them with techniques or tactics that have been put in place to deal away with terrorism or at least reduce cases of terror. Since all continents are affected by terrorists, for example the Boko Haram in Nigeria, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the Al Qaeda, this paper will specifically …show more content…

It is politically motivated to put people in terror and this is not recognised by the laws of the United States. This is why terrorist are criminals because they violate laws. Their acts include upheavals, unrests, killings and government dictatorship (Rubbelke, 2009). The attacks are usually very random and their target is specific. An instance is the attack on American airplanes by the nineteen Al Qaeda terrorists. Two planes which were hijacked crashed on the two towers in New York City, the other plane crashed into the pentagon leading to a collapse of the building and the last plane crashed in Pennsylvania. 2996 people died and 6000 were injured (Rubbelke, 2009). America responded by striking Afghanistan. It is clear that political violence extends further to destroying humanity and also America incurred costs of up to 13 billion dollars (Rubbelke,
