Textbook Analysis Essay When one thinks of Social Studies, they might think of important dates in time, key events in history, names of famous or influential people, and much more. The information covered in this academic subject is vast, and continuously expanding due to new information being learned by scholars in their field, as well as current events that are quickly becoming more and more relevant in the world today (Chapin, 2013). Though this information is expansive, and much of it is available through technologies, such as the internet, most schools today will still rely on good old-fashioned textbooks. In the state of Missouri, schools utilize different textbooks to teach Social Studies, depending on the grade level being taught. This is largely due to the fact that, different grade levels will cover different topics and materials (Chapin, 2013; Hardman, Drew, and Egan, 2013). For the purposes of this textbook analysis, the textbook selected is for the fourth grade, and covers state specific information, such as state history, geography, and culture for Missouri (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, 2006). In the fourth grade, students typically learn about the state in which they reside (Chapin, 2013). This expands to The Missouri Social Studies textbook is broken up into five units; which are: introduction/recap of the United States, Missouri land and people, Missouri’s first communities, State growth and change, and Missouri today (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, 2006). This textbook meets the definition of Social Studies, as it discusses not only local facts, but national factors as well. Additionally, by addressing the state’s land, people, communities, growth, change, and recent Missouri factors in a fun and engaging way this book helps students build their understanding of the world directly around
