My writing from the 2017 to 2018 school year displays my improvement in several facets of writing. Since the beginning of the year, I was strong in picking relevant textual evidence. My textual evidence always supported my claim since they were relevant to the topic, even though my analyses were not always accurate and explanatory. Nonetheless, I had many areas of writing to improve on. During the year, I had trouble with making claims debatable and specific and explaining the “why” and “how” when analyzing quotations. Furthermore, I struggled to avoid words that did not make sense within sentences. In my Re-Imagining Mythology In-Class Essay, I wrote, “Euridice did not want to be saved by him since even she did not come to greet him.” In this statement, I never explain why Euridice did not want to greet Orpheus. Additionally, in The Handmaid’s Tale passage analysis essay, I do not explain how my statement is true: “The simile highlights that beautiful girls, like Offred, are basically ‘extinct’ in society.” In this sentence, I never discuss how the simile highlights that there are few attractive girls in society. I introduce my analysis as a fact and do not use any part of the quotation to prove my point. However, I displayed improvement in explaining “how” and “why” in A Failing Regime: The Republic of Gilead in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale: “The sporty connotation of ‘huddle’ is that of a team, huddling to come up with their next play in the game. Thus, the word ‘huddle’ suggests that Offred and Nick are unified. They unite through their attraction to each other and… their common struggle with a life of repression.” In this analysis, I explain Offred and Nick’s unity is revealed through the connotation of “huddle,” and I describe that they are unified by their attraction to each other and their shared struggle to live a free life.
