Unfortunately, this topic does not lend itself to much comprehensive discussion regarding international travel for the subject airline. While Alaska Airlines has ventured boldly into international service throughout its history, including regular service to and from Russia in the 1980’s, the current route availability is restricted almost entirely to the North American Continent (Alaska airlines: Historical overview). Conclusively, the benefits to this type of program from a customer standpoint are easily evident, yet at the same time, these types of programs can prove problematic or even confusing for customers. For example, it may not be obvious to search for a flight to a destination not serviced by Alaska Airlines on their website; while at the same time, a customer purchasing a ticket to an destination on Alaska Airlines website serviced by a code share partner may be surprised or even confused see the identifier of that airline appear on their ticket. Whereas, from the airline’s perspective, these agreements allow them to sell seats for which they hold no inventory of their own and therefore no liability, while increasing sales on their own flights when sold by the other carriers. In the end, the sales resultant from these Code Sharing agreements are win for both carriers. Ultimately, despite the complications, Code Sharing and mileage partner programs provide for greater flexibility for customers, and improved sales flexibility and service for the
