Excellent case study Marine. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) involves a high level of stress and anxiety with exposure to the traumatic event. Based on DM history, she experienced multiple sexual and physical assaults which caused her to develop PTSD. DM also reports depressive mood in her history. It is fascinating to read about the different types of therapies used in treating PTSD symptoms. For the purpose of DM situation, she will benefit from a Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(TFCBT) that will target her PTSD symptoms. This therapy is an individual setting comprising of 12 sessions for six months (Bisson, Andrew, Copper & Lewis,2013). In the case of DM, she will benefit more from an Individual setting to promote privacy …show more content…
TFCBT involves cognitive, behavioral and cognitive-behavioral interventions to help deal with cognitive distortion from exposure to the traumatic event. TFCBT use thought stopping, exposure and cognitive restructuring to treat the patients (Mabey & Servellen, 2014). Some of the challenges identified, with TFCBT involves fear, trust, and safety. A meta-analysis study that was done on the effectiveness of psychotherapy interventions for an adult with PTSD indicated that individual Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is great at reducing PTSD symptoms in patients who had symptoms lasting three months or more compared with non-trauma focused CBT (Bisson et al., 2013). The study also recommended a duration of 8 to 12 sessions if addressing several problems. DM experienced multiple sexual and physical assaults with the presence of co-morbidities (Bisson et al., 2013). Studies done on TFCBT has shown to reduce intrusion, hyperarousal, and avoidance. TFCBT is done by merging re-experiencing, working through trauma-related memories and emotions and teaching better methods of managing trauma-related stressors (Jonas et al.,2013). With TFCBT, D.M will be made to confront her fears. With TFCBT, her traumatic incident and will gradually begin to resolve to the …show more content…
Studies compared the utility of EMDR in victims with PTSD to the use of other therapies. The result of the studies gave some benefits, about the rapid decrease in distress compared to exposure-only conditions. Studies show that EMDR therapy and TF-CBT have different ways of operating. EMDR therapy consists of eight-phase treatment and does not have daily homework. (Ehlers, Bisson, Clark, Creamer, Pilling, Richards, & Yule, 2010). Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is another evidence treatment that is effective in treating PTSD. DM can also benefit from “eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR), psychoeducation, imagery rehearsal, memory structure intervention, hypnotherapy and Critical incident stress debriefing” (Ehlers et al.,
