“Champion of the World” In the excerpt, “Champion of the World,” Maya Angelou recalls of a specific time when growing up during the African American oppression. In paragraph one, Angelou uses the method of description in order to indicate that a crucial event is about to begin. She uses phrases from the passage such as, “The last inch of space was filled,” and “Uncle Willie had turned the radio up to its last notch so that youngsters on the porch wouldn’t miss a word,” so that the reader can visualize how closely packed the store was. African Americans from far away distances had even arrived in order to watch the fight (107). Linda wonder if she knows because she might treat her differently if she found out if she hasn’t already. 24) Linda’s biggest complaint against Mrs. Hobbs is that she still treats Linda’s daughter as a slave, going on to say that she will be a nice maid in the future even though they are located in the free states. 25) The letter states that they sympathize for her situation and they encourage her to come home to be happy or she can have the option to have her freedom bought by anyone that she chooses in the community.
The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
Mrs. Jones was angry at Roger, but she knew he was doing it for a reason, so she wanted to help him out. “Now ain’t you ashamed of yourself?” (pg.5) “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face.
After talking to my group about the book Thank You Ma’am by: Langston Hughes, we realized that Mrs. Jones is very helpful. We think Mrs.jones is giving and teaches him good life lesson that are helpful in life. The first reason why I think Mrs. jones is helpful is because she is giving. As proof, when she brought him to her house she realizes he was dirty. So she let him wash his face in her sink
The poem Langston Hughes wrote in 1936 called “Let America be America again”. Langston Hughes an afro American in the United States of America. Langston Hughes' philosophical idea was equality in the United States of America. The first way Langston Hughes shows his philosophical idea of equality is by showing he wants everyone to be treated fairly and have the government not allow people to be racist to the Afro-Americans, Indians, and other immigrants located in the United States of America. The second way Langston Hughes shows his philosophical idea of equality is by showing his desire and dedication towards of achieving equality and shows off his dedication of hard work to achieve his dream but can’t due to of the barriers he has to overcome
Racism has been around for a very long time. It’s effect America’s history a lot. Throughout the years’ racism has improved but it’s still improving. African Americans have struggled a lot with prejudice. Prejudice is an adverse judgment formed without knowledge of the facts.
“Thank You M’am” Essay Response In the story “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, the boy Roger, seems to be lonely. The story is about a boy named Roger who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she takes him to her house and takes care of him. Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.
The poems, “Lineage”, by Margaret Walker, and “Helen Keller”, by Langston Hughes have many similarities and differences in the theme, imagery, and figurative language. The theme in Walker’s poem is about how grandmas are very tough, and you should respect your elders, while the theme in Hughes’ poem is about when times are hard, find your inner strength. A similarity between the two themes is that both idolize and admire strong women that have the power to find strength through dark times. For example, Walker’s poem states, “...full of sturdiness and singing. My grandmothers were strong”.
On page 31 Mrs. Jones says to Roger “You ought to be my son”. She changed his life by giving him discipline. She tried to treat him with respect because she wanted him to stop pocketbook stealing and wanted him to behave himself. She wanted him to be a better person because she did horrible things when she was his age. She wanted him to behave because she saw him with a dirty face and some worn out shoes she was trying to tell him to behave, so he could get a good education.
Thank You Ma’am By: Kush Can you imagine a woman who would kick a stranger and then later in the story feed the same person? Well, in the short story, “Thank You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, the protagonist, does just that. She has a very complicated personality because she is hostile, but still lonely and caring. A big indication that Mrs. Jone hostile is, after, a boy made an attempt to steal her purse and failed, he fell.
A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
In Thank You Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones showed the golden Rule by bringing Rodger into her home. She showed much hospitality towards him, even though he tried to do something horrible to her. Mrs. Jones could have done something cruel to Roger, but instead she was kind to him. She taught him a valuable life lesson, although she was not mean about it. Following the golden rule in life is very important for everyone, you should always follow this rule, no matter what.

In the edge of your seat story, “Thank You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes, the main character of the story is very entertaining with every action that she takes. The main event that had happened in the story is, a boy (Rodger) wanted to get blue suede shoes and he didn’t have enough money, so he tried to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones purse, and that was a bad choice. After that, she caught him with a strong, bold arm and took him to her house. While there, she talks with the boy and feeds him.

It presents the readers, the idea of goodness, the theme of trust, forgiveness, and kindness. Hughes is able to convert a language that is easier to understand by characterizing the context of story, advancing important themes, and using dialogue among the characters. Trust is one of themes that stood out while analyzing the short story. Though Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones has been victimized Roger worries that she won’t trust him, so he moves.
