“Thank You Ma'am” Interpretive Response “Thank You Ma’m” is short story written by Langston Hughes. The main characters are Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger. Mrs. Jones is a large woman who works at a beauty salon. Mrs. Jones lives in a rooming house, so she doesn’t have a lot of money. Roger is a skinny 14-15 year old boy who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse.

After that, she caught him with a strong, bold arm and took him to her house. While there, she talks with the boy and feeds him.
