The 1920s, otherwise known as the “Roaring Twenties,” is labeled as a time of desolated, self-absorbed pursuits of money and pleasure. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, he explores materialism in the 1920s and profoundly clarifies the issues during this time period. In the course of the 1920s, there are various standards that the typical “American” lives by. The nation is split into strict social classes and wherever one falls, this determines how they live. In The Geat Gatsby, the Buchannans and Mr. Gatsby are pretty wealthy. Myrtle, Tom’s mistress, was poor but acted as if she was of the richest. The rich individuals live in two parts of towns with big houses and lots of elegance added inside. Others are not so fortunate and live in run down areas and houses. No one cares about anyone else except for themselves. This is shown greatly in how Tom is cheating on Daisy throughout the storyline of The Great Gatsby. These ginormous parties were thrown by individuals who were pretty wealthy but anyone could come and go as they pleased. No one asks questions, they just believe that the time is great time to be alive. As many ladies are starting to become “flappers,” a new dance is in style for these party goers. A flapper is a young lady who has a great style and is wrapped up in enjoying herself and having a great time only.
