The 40 Developmental Assets are a set of values or characteristics that will shape children into successful, contributing adults. This group of essential assets is necessary to a child's development and growth; without these assets, a child will most likely fail in their life. The 40 Developmental Assets can also be applied to fictional characters, and various other characters in novels and stories. On the topic of fiction, The Pigman by Paul Zindel is a novel that focuses on two teenagers, John and Lorraine, who meet an old man named Mr. Pignati, who they nicknamed the Pigman. In uncomplicated words, it means John has a good friend. John has one Positive Peer Influence, and that is Lorraine. Lorraine’s previous actions show her to be a Positive Peer Influence. In this case, we are going to target two specific actions she has taken. One of the innumerable actions Lorraine has taken to prove herself a Positive Peer Influence, is when she perseverates in her goal of getting John to stop smoking and drinking. Smoking and drinking are severe hazards to John’s health. As John’s Positive Peer Influence Lorraine cannot let him continue to endanger himself. And she does not. Even when John brushes off her warnings, Lorraine keeps trying to get him to stop. Lorraine even goes so far as to show John pictures of what smokers’ lungs end up looking like. Another example of her being a Positive Peer Influence is when she is the voice of responsibility. What I mean is she keeps John in line. When John and Lorraine get the keys to the Pigman’s house - the Pigman had suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital, so the Pigman told John and Lorraine to go make themselves at home - John wants to throw a party. In this case, Lorraine is very responsible and tells John that a party is not a very good idea. These two examples both contribute that John has acquired the asset of Positive Peer
