The four figures shown in the photograph are demanding the freedom for all women that were political prisoners. This photo was taken on the 7th of March 1979 on the day before the international women's day. Additionally, the photograph was taken during the time of the international anti-apartheid movement in London during the late 1980s.The anti-apartheid movement (AAM), initially put forward by the British, was an international movement opposing the South African apartheid system whereby demonstrations and boycotts were used to convey their point. With the apartheid creating massive international awareness, it is clear many major countries such as; USA, the UK, and Holland, opposed the South African apartheid government and laws. These major countries formed boycotts and demonstrations in order to convey their point, with the United Kingdom being the most effective in doing so. The United Kingdom anti-apartheid movement was the most effective because they formed strong connections with other major political parties and countries, by which many effective actions took place in stopping the apartheid government. The various actions that took place in stopping the apartheid government where; sanctions, which included the stopping of trade, the stopping of trade included oil and access to arms as well as any economical support towards South Africa, ultimately weakening the government and the white people of South Africa, forcing them to eliminate the apartheid and its oppressive laws against black
