“Submitting to censorship is to enter…the world where there are no bad words and no bad deeds. But it is also the world where choice has been taken away and reality distorted. And that is the most dangerous world of all.” This was stated by Lois Lowry, the author of “The Giver,” a novel taking place in the most censored environments imaginable. People in our society believe books, movies, and videos need to be censored because children and young adults will be negatively influenced. They do not realize that kids and teens will learn about these things in other ways. One novel, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” continuously gets criticized on the open discussion on race and sexuality. Books should not be censored because it allows kids and teens to learn more about the real world, and allows many taboo topics to be opened up for discussion. Kids, teens especially, always have expectations put on them by their parents. Then they always need to face the decision of doing what they want or doing what is expected of them. If people follow what everyone wants them to do, then they never truly be content. Instead, they will be living their parents dream, and the cycle may continue with their kids. The people who prohibited the novel did not even completely read the book. They were “reading the copied pages out of context, the board immediately removed the book from the shelves.” The people in charge are not even considering the novel in its full context, thus they are not able to take out the real themes from the story.
