There are many types of hero, fictional, historical, and modern day. Odysseus was a historical hero, who saved his home of Ithaca. He had so many heroic traits, such as, bravery, courage, caring, loyalty, determination, and so much more. Fictional, modern day and other historical heroes have many of these traits as well. Therefore, the word hero has not changed.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
Success reinforces heroic values because it builds one’s confidence in themselves. This is supported in The Odyssey, after Odysseus and his crew faced many trials, including one where Odysseus successfully got them out of a near death situation with the cyclops, Polyphemus, they had to face another one with Scylla and Charybdis. Before facing these two monsters, Odysseus inspired his crew by declaring, “When Cyclops penned us up in his vaulted cave... my courage, my presence of mind and tactics saved us all and we will live to remember this one day… up now, follow my orders,/ all of us work as one!” (Homer, 12. 228-231).
Mostly everyone knows Odysseus, but some people might consider him a hero, while others might not. Odysseus can either be seen as a hero or as a regular person, but there is one clear answer. Odysseus is a hero. Throughout Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus illustrates three main qualities: wisdom, bravery, and leadership.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
The Odyssey is a quintessential example of the hero's journey. By traveling to reach Ithaca and reunite with his wife Penelope, Odysseus undergoes several pivotal moments of character development that leads him to better understand himself. Characters like Odysseus seem to survive best when thrust into this challenging world full of tribulations and trials. Some of the key characteristics that help him to do so include his cunning, attractiveness, and powers of persuasion. These traits allow a mortal man to mingle in the affairs of gods, as demonstrated by Odysseus's interactions with Circe, Calypso, and Athena.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus repeatedly shows that he is polytropos, for as Zeus says “There is no mortal half so wise”(3). Using his wits, Odysseus gets him and his men out of several sticky situations in the Odyssey, proving his leadership through his actions that save the lives of his crew member. On the other hand Odysseus’ streak of constantly outsmarting challenges, goes to his head, and unfortunately causes Odysseus to develop a hubris. His pride at times makes him arrogant, believing that he always knows best, which leads to the untimely demise of his crew. While Odysseus proves to be good leader by saving his crew from trouble with his wits, he is ultimately a bad leader because he refuses to listen to advice.
In the epic tale The Odyssey by Homer, we are introduced to Odysseus, King of Ithaca. Odysseus is on a journey to get back to his wife and son. Throughout his journey, he runs into many challenges that attempt to stop him from getting reaching his destination. We learn about many of his traits as we travel with him on his journey. When he finally reaches home all of his traits become clear: his strength, arrogance, wit, charm, and courage.
The main character Odysseus in the Odyssey written by Homer is generally thought to be a great hero; however, he shows more traits of a quite flawed character on closer inspection. Around the beginning of Odysseus’ journey home after the war, Odysseus decides to take a detour to the home of a cyclops deciding to not listen to his men’s suggestions to leave while they still could; consequently, it does not end well: “Ah, how sound that was, Yet I refused. I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer no pretty sight it turned out, for my friend” (9.130-132). This thought by Odysseus shows that he realized his decision to go to the mysterious island wasn’t the most rational one and that his men’s pleas to leave were the better option, but he decides to be stubborn and place his curiosity before his men’s safety resulting in a non-heroic
A legend to a great many people would be somebody who has strength and has gambled or yielded his life for others. To others a man that has found or accomplished something exceptional. In antiquated Greece a legend was viewed as a man frequently of heavenly family, celebrated for his courageous achievements and favored by the divine beings. About the time Odysseus reached Ithaca, Polyphemus the cyclops Odysseus blinded is asking Poseidon, his father, a way to cure his blinded eye. Polyphemus asked, “Father, Poseidon, is there any way to get my eye back?” “Polyphemus, there is a way to cure your eye, but you must go through a long and harsh journey to get what you want,” Poseidon answers, “You must find a way to go to Circe’s palace and find a way to get her to help you on your quest.” “That’s all I have to do?” Polyphemus said, “Thank you, Father.”
Even though people typically believe that the main hero of Homer’s the Odyssey is Odysseus himself, the true hero of the Odyssey is Penelope. Even though her entire story isn’t told in the epic poem, you can still tell that she went through struggles and trials just as her husband Odysseus did. Along with going through trials, she comes up with witty ideas in order to overcome them. She is very clever, and she also plans long-term. She is loyal to Odysseus and faithfully waits for his return.
In the Odyssey,there are so many big events happen that tell a great story. I hope you will read the book (The Odyssey By: Homer) and enjoy it! I think that Odysseus is a great person sometimes but, bad at other times. The Odyssey is a book that you usually have to read in high school.
