Primary Resource Assignment

The enlightenment period was a movement that strived for reason and the thought and power of individuals to solve problems. Different ideas and approaches were thought up by different philosophers, to achieve different goals but they all had one thing in common and that was to push for progress. Most of the philosophers believed in humanity and the future of the world, and while some of their ideas are not commonly used today in society, they most definitely were instrumental to the way that we live our life today.

Voltaire’s political ideas were not revolutionary, he preferred the idea of a constitutional monarch to that of a republic. He thought he found a tolerant, enlightened monarch in Prussia. “Voltaire had become a considerable power throughout Europe. He corresponded with hundreds of the most educated and enlightened people in Europe, and welcomed important visitors to his home. He wrote fundamental works and was read by millions. He was even feared by the authorities because of his witty, satirical pamphlets.” (pg 389 Gorbatov)

Karl Marx stood for capitalism, his main purpose was to increase profits though land, labor and free market. It is a replacement of slavery and feudalism.
