The American dream is the hope that one day no matter what religion, nationality, class, or gender can one day be successful. America was considered to be the place to go and start over while having the freedom to do so. Therefore, many people came to America from all over the world to gain wealth and happiness. The novel The Great Gatsby shows exampled how different classes and how people themselves viewed the American Dream. In The 1920s the idea of the American Dream became very popular. With the change in women roles (became more independent and had the to vote), the boom in the economy, and the increase of immigration people had motivation to change. Having automobiles available to not only the higher class but also lower class made it easier for everyone to travel across the country and find jobs. Jobs including mechanics, banking, clerks, and law enforcement. Although the higher class group was already wealthy, they always seemed to want more. Myrtle is a woman who comes from no money and is the mistress of Tom who come from old money. Myrtle was fascinated with the idea of having money and being with Tom took her away from her reality of not having any money. As for Tom he is a very wealthy man who is unhappy with his life so he looks for happiness in Myrtle. Both doing so just to have their American dream. Other characters in the novel such as Nick and Gatsby also desire to accomplish the American Dream. Both these man however are working or everything they have and want to accomplish. Nick seems content with not having as much money as others and does not let the wealth affect him in negative way. As for Gatsby he did work for all his wealth and he did become a wealthy man, but he figured out that wealth does not come with happiness. He is unhealthy because he does not have the women he
