The Great Gatsby Essay In the book The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick tells a story about Jay Gatsby who believes in the American Dream. Nick says that Gatsby spent his whole life in the thought that he can make his dream come true and that things will go the way he planned, if not better. Although Gatsby had his life planned out and wanted to make sure that he spent it with Daisy, things took an unexpected turn for Gatsby and unfortunately for him, the American dream will remain a dream. The one most affected was Gatsby. Gatsby wanted nothing more but to be with Daisy again. Unfortunately things did not go the way he planned, he was very disappointed and felt betrayed by Daisy. Five years can really make a person change. That's what Gatsby did not realize. With all the money and luxurious things that these people have, the American dream can still cause destruction. In chapter 6, Gatsby get upset because he discovers that Daisy doesn't like the parties that he throws and they only reason he would throw them was to get her attention. The green light is not a symbol of Daisy, but is a symbol of Gatsby’s dream of being with her. Although Gatsby did his best to make his dream a reality, he was not able to reach his goal. Gatsby cares about how he is viewed by people and believed that if he got his dream girl that people will see him as the ideal man that everyone would like. After everything Gatsby has done for Daisy and after Daisy failed him, that should have been the extent that the American dream would cost him, but instead Gatsby did not give up until he had what he desired.
