The Argument Essay: Implementing The Philosophy Of High Schools

High schools have changed drastically over the years; from the education to the discipline. However, one thing that has been similar throughout the years is that most schools do not allow students to learn and experience things they want to learn. Students do not necessarily get prepared for the “real” world and students are being pampered by teachers. For example, Diane Ravitch says, “We want to prepare them for a useful life.” Ravitch then continues with several more points on what education should really be like. Once students leave high school, or even college, they will not have someone watching over them and making sure they are on task. The issue is schools have certain philosophies, however, they do not know how to implement it. Now, most high school students already have either a specific or general idea of what they want to study when they go to college. Schools should allow students to study specifically subjects that will increase their knowledge in the subject they want to study. This will allow the student to become more prepared in entering college by having plenty of previous knowledge of the topic. High schools today just teach students general topics and students do not get the opportunity to study what they want. According to Leon Botstein, he says in his article, “...we might construct new kinds of institutions, each dedicated to one activity, from science to dance, to which adolescents could devote their energies while working together with professionals in those fields.” Students should not be forced to study a certain subject in which they will most likely not implement in their career. Instead, they should be studying and being educated in subjects and courses in which they will use and will benefit them in their college and career
