The Armenian Genocide By: Noah Lind. The Armenian genocide was a mass killing event committed by the Young Turks, a revolutionary group located in the Ottoman Empire. It occurred from 1915 to 1923. During this time, Armenians in the Ottoman empire were deliberately killed with methods varying from death marches to firing squads. There were several causes for this tragic event. To start off, the Armenians were used as the scapegoat for the empire's problems, ever since the start of the 20th century. The Ottoman empire was shrinking, and the main officials kept blaming the problems on the Armenian people, who had done nothing wrong as a group. Armenians were subjected to beatings and violence from the general public. To add insult to injury, Muslim refugees were pouring in from each side of the state, and the government decided to give the Muslims land that had been previously owned or stolen from the Armenians. Finally, World War 1 was also a major cause of the genocide. After the Ottoman Empire suffered major casualties from the Battle of Sarkams, Armenian soldiers along with Muslim soldiers were demobilized and put into labor divisions. Although the main reasons for the loss was poor leadership, the Young Turks blamed the failure on the Armenians. Some Armenians that were located near the Ottoman Empire were actually in Russian territory, which showed the Young Turk government that the Armenians were “treacherous”.
