The Tortoise and the Hare: College Basketball Style Around 600 BC Aesop described a competition that compared creatures of vastly differing speeds in “The Tortoise and the Hare”. In men’s college basketball every contemporary game highlights the contrasting aspects of this tempo battle and this past seasons game between UVA and Duke, along with classic contests featuring prototypes in tempo control Princeton and Loyola Marymount, truly demonstrate the similarities and differences between the slowdown and up-tempo basketball strategy. Up-tempo and slowdown styles in men’s college basketball have the similar goal of victory but look to achieve it differently. Both employ specialized defensive schemes and offensive sets in attempts to compensate
This first year of multiple-class basketball tournaments in Indiana was a historic one. History was made because for the first time in IHSAA history, there were four basketball state champions (“IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament…”). Those champions were Pike High School for class 4A, Indianapolis Cathedral High School for 3A, Alexandria High School for 2A, and Lafayette Central Catholic High School for A (“IHSAA Boys Basketball State Champions”). After this first year of multiple-class basketball in Indiana, the IHSAA board of directors reviewed the class system again.
Woo describes the competition level at some of high school basketball’s most prestigious events, such as the McDonalds All-American Game and the Jordan Classic as slacking. According to the author, the events have transformed from very competitive games into glamorous showcases of skill. This lack of focus on competition has led to a lack of defense and overall emotion in these events. The author also states that the scouts disapprove of this transformation; however, they do not see these events reverting to older
Coach Wooden and Me by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Our 50-Year Friendship On and Off the Court | Conversation Starters When NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar first visited UCLA to meet the man who would be the greatest coach in American history, Coach John Wooden, he was taken aback by the man’s attention to his grades rather than to his high school basketball record. But the 18 year old cocky kid from New York got his first lesson from the Coach who would be his mentor and friend for the rest of his life: “basketball is temporary, but knowledge is forever. ” That was the beginning of a coach-player mentorship that blossomed into a 50-year

Throughout the interview with Mr. Owens, he explained how basketball has not only impacted his life, but also the lives of his wife and three children. When asked, “What challenges have you faced as a coach?” Mr. Owens’s first response was “time.”

378 Jump shots bouncing off the rim, passes to the wrong team, a silence where one could hear a penny drop, and the word “BASELINE” is what I remember from practice two days before the Highland Park game. We were playing live against the scout team, but we were playing them like they were the ‘95-’96 Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan at the helm. After a few minutes of this nonsense, Coach McKendrick told our team to get on the baseline to run. However, it was not because we were playing poor. It was because our captains were not talking to our team and bringing more energy to our practice.
When you look at the literal definition of democracy in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, there is a decently large explanation. When looking at this definition and trying to decide whether the Athenian democratic system was truly democratic, one would have to go with the answer no. While it has been stated that Athens is the “cradle of democracy”, and that it was better than any of the other governments in the world, it was still a work in progress. The Athenian democracy, while it did give more power to the people, still left a lot of citizens out. The current American democracy may have steamed from Athens, but they do not really have that much in common.
I have played sports sense I can remember. Unfortunately, I did get a concussion in high school playing basketball. I had to sit out three games and had to pass a neurology exam to be able to play. I do agree with school rules on concussions. A brain injury is something you do not mess with.

As the number of athletes rise in schools, so does the chance of athletic related injuries. This is leading to the increase number of athletic trainers at the high school level across the country. Athletic trainer is defined as a “health care professional who collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation” (AMA 19).
A head coaching job as a Division 1 men’s basketball coach is not a job that all can handle. The work many endure to reach the head coaching spot is long and difficult. Being a coach involves teaching young men not only how to be better at basketball, but to be better people as well. The only way to keep a job is if the team does well. Tensions can rise if success is not achieved and the available jobs are slim to none.
