This is a problem because of how the youth look up to sports heroes. In 2008, a player named Derek Rose, who played for the University of Memphis, decided to go into the draft after just one year on the Memphis team. Rose entered the draft as a freshman and went to the Chicago Bulls as a first round draft pick. After Rose was drafted by the Bulls, allegations that he had committed academic fraud began to fly about in newspapers and websites all around the country. Rose had cheated on his SAT, and he should have been punished or fined, they said.
In “ High School Athletes Should Be Able to Go Pro”, Pitino addresses the rule of having to be 19 to enter the draft. And how he thinks you should be able to go pro straight out of high school. Rick states that he had 6 guys commit to him but didn 't go they went straight to the NBA. Because they didn 't want college they wanted to start making their living. And gives a resolution if the league didn 't want them to go straight there.
Being a professional athlete in any sport is something that takes hard work and dedication. The National Basketball League is the home to hundreds of players that have come from high school, college, and even from across the world. In recent years, there has been a big debate on whether these players should go to college or not before going into the NBA. In the article, “The Case for Getting Schooled”, David Gardner says that all of these players should attend college before starting their careers in the National Basketball Association. Gardner’s claim that basketball players should first go to college is flawed because a player might be good enough already to go into the NBA right away, players will play with better talent in the NBA, and
The book, Backboards & Blackboards: College Athletics and Role Engulfment, By Patricia A. and Peter Adler examines a university basketball program to see how playing college athletics impacts players. It is believed that once introduced to college level athletics, players discover a very different experience than anticipated, once they become part of the team and environment found within the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The Adler’s studied college basketball for several years, “Illuminating the processes that operate within the “black Box” of college athletics, showing how and why the transformations and outcomes occur” (page 26). Before the study completed by the Alder’s the only look into college athletics was done through Academic research and journalists.
A higher standard would be expected from high school athletes, and they would rise to the occasion. In fact, they already do. Every year, thousands of fresh-out-of-high-school boys move up to college level basketball, which has a shot clock. No evident disruptions in the newcomers’ games are seen. Better basketball is played in college (for more factors than just the shot clock of
At the professional level this is strictly an occupation; a well-paid occupation, but still an occupation. Because of that things aren’t quite as structured and an athlete isn’t being told what doing it their free time. Making the right choices requires maturity, which according to Jones many kids who have become what is known as the “one-and-done” era lack. This group of players consists of highly touted high school basketball prospects that are forced to make an unwanted pit stop at a university prior to entering into the NBA.
Some great college basketball players have come from not so great places and their families may not be able to find a steady living place. In “Shaq against Age of one and done,” Shaq says,”A lot of guys do it because of their financial situation and they need to do it. That's the only way to provide a better means for their family. So when you look at it from that aspect, I understand it.” Players like this go after one year to receive money for their families, not themselves.
Football is America’s favorite sport. American citizens spend their Sunday nights glued to the television, and Friday nights at the stadium watching athletes tackle, run and catch. Some viewers believe that football is too dangerous and should be eliminated from high school. Football is a dangerous sport; however, it should not be eliminated from high schools, because that tactic would be too severe. There are other ways of decreasing the dangers of football.
Do you ever wish that your middle school had sports teams? Participating in sports in middle school is very important for numerous reasons. When it comes to teenagers being active and being a part of a team is important. This is why middle schools should have sports teams.
One of the best college basketball Mike Krzyzewski agrees with high school players entering the NBA right out of high school. " A kid who's really, really good coming out of high school, who does not want to go to school, would gain more from being in a pro system where he is working on his craft and his body and the development everyday”(Daniels,2). The fact that a future Hall of Fame collage coach said that should mean a lot. Why should a kid who just want to play ball have to waste another year at school. Not only does Mike Krzyzewski agree but also the NBA commissioner Adam Silver would want high school players to enter the league.
In this community lately, there has been discussion lately on sports possibly being removed from the high schools. Although, they get the most recognition that does not mean that just because one little thing it gets removed and completely forgotten about. In fact, so many people do high school sports in the text “Are High School Sports Good For Kids” it explicitly states “Here in Michigan almost 300,000 young people take part in high school sports every year.” This scene particularly shows that many youth athletes participate in high school sports in only one state alone.
College sports are much different than middle school and high school sports. There is a high level of pressure to perform in college athletics, especially in Division 1. Division 1 college athletics contain a gigantic fan base. This fan base consists of individuals with either a personal preference in a school or was a past alumnus. Regardless, most of these fans are extremely passionate about the success of their team’s athletic department and become very impatient when things aren’t going their way.
Did you know that in March Madness (one of the biggest tournaments for college basketball) that there are over 9 million dollars spent on just betting. No commercials or anything, just betting. College basketball is so much more interesting than NBA basketball, but in the NBA the stadiums are bigger so more people come. People don't realize how lazy players are in the NBA. College basketball is so much more interesting than NBA because they try harder in games, they rebound, which leads to big things, and there has been more money spent on March Madness than any other tournament in college basketball.
While some believe that athletes should have their own choice at making a decision to go pro straight out of high school, they should not do so because they will not be able to manage their million dollar contracts respectively. Speaking of contracts, the NBA should eliminate guaranteed contracts for rookies drafted in the first round of the NBA draft. They should do this because a careless high school kid, could just go into the draft not knowing, or caring on how much they are going to make, with the lack of experience on handling millions of dollars. This is very unrepsonsibible for a teenager, and not only for the high school athlete, but also for the basketball association as well. This is because of there noncommitment to have these players
The biggest difference between both is how they get treated very differently. In professional basketball all the players get paid to play but, in college they do not get paid a single dime. This is a huge problem because they both make tons of money for their teams, from selling tickets to selling merchandise a lot of fans want to show their support for their favorite team. Because college players don’t get paid, they often don’t have money to provide for their needs. One quote from Shabazz Napier who is a college player seemed to be disturbing as he said “Sometimes there’s hungry nights where I’m not able to eat, but I still got to play up to my capabilities.”
