The scripture is depicting a soldier wearing a combat while holding his weapon high ready to strike an enemy on the ground. This shows a defeat to the enemy. Ancient Greece has been a battlefield from its history but the Greek Dark Age came to a close as many people agreed the urbanized culture to be restored leading city-states to rise.
The city-state existence brought about another style of war whereby Hoplites were armored and went to war on foot while shields locked together and spears pointing forward.
