To the school board, without awareness, there is no change. Discussing any event can help showcase what truly happened. Identifying what may have been the right steps and what had been taken, who, if anyone, is to blame, and most importantly, how to improve the situation to benefit all rather than just one, Children, like all people, are influenced by the world around them. Whether it's the movies they watch or the books they read, each detail can affect their opinions and how they treat others. If we continuously protect children from the harsh realities of what is going on in the world around them, they will not be able to change what they believe is needed to achieve a better future. Angie Thomas’s book The Hate U Give is fictional, but sadly, the events that happen in the story are anything but fictional. This is why it is important for the book not to be banned. Why should we ban a book that tells the story of a young black woman and the challenges she and those in her community face? A book that discusses the corrupt practices in the acts of police officers. A book that does not push for violent acts against the police, but that highlights the meaning of what it truly is to stand up for what you believe in by sometimes telling those who are violent to stop. In this book, we hear about a young boy, Khalil, who was murdered at the hands of a police officer. The book does an excellent job of highlighting both sides of the incident. Khalil came back to the door of the vehicle to ask if his friend Starr was okay. The police officer believed he saw a gun, and that’s why he felt as though he needed to fire.
