Angie Thomas’s book The Hate U Give is fictional, but sadly, the events that happen in the story are anything but fictional. This is why it is important for the book not to be banned. Why should we ban a book that tells the story of a young black woman and the challenges she and those in her community face? A book that discusses the corrupt practices in the acts of police officers. A book that does not push for violent acts against the police, but that highlights the meaning of what it truly is to stand up for what you believe in by sometimes telling those who are violent to stop. In this book, we hear about a young boy, Khalil, who was murdered at the hands of a police officer. The book does an excellent job of highlighting both sides of the incident. Khalil came back to the door of the vehicle to ask if his friend Starr was okay. The police officer believed he saw a gun, and that’s why he felt as though he needed to fire.
