Revolutionary War The Revolutionary War was between Great Britain and the 13 colonies. The whole idea of the war was for the 13 colonies to break free from Great Britain and declare their Independence. There are many causes, important battles, and key leaders that were apart of the war. Tensions were building up for almost a decade between the American colonists and the British. After the French and Indian War, Great Britain was in debt. To repay their debt, the British government decided to tax the colonists starting with the Stamp Act in 1775. The tax was on almost all paper items. The battle is known as the, “shot heard around the world.” British troops marched to Lexington first then to Concord. Paul Revere and other men warned everyone that the British were coming. No one knows to this day who fired the first shot (Battles of Lexington and Concord). With the war in full swing, and not much hope for the Americans, came the Battle of Saratoga. The battle took place in 1777 and is known as the turning point of the war (History & Culture). The battle was won by the Americans. By the major victory of the Americans, it allowed the French to make their decision on an alliance with the Americans. The Battle of Trenton was a battle fought on Christmas day against Washington and his troops and the Hessians. The rumor is the Hessians were drunk from celebrating Christmas that they could not fight back (Battles of Trenton and Princeton). Washington took the victory with ease. The last major battle fought was the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. With the help from the French, the British General Cornwallis surrendered from being blocked in all the way around.
