1. First person narration of a story of war told by one's experience was nothing new at the time. Many stories had been written of war and of battle, all featured great heroic stories with high expectations. Crane's approach to tell the story of war through the eyes of a young soldier was different because unlike most, his was better at showing the bitter truth and at showing the true struggle that a soldier might have with him or herself.. Throughout the story the main character dreams of instances where him and the army he fought for would triumph as heroes and the world would know of their bravery. In Crane's description we learn more of what it felt like to be in the middle of a battle and what might go through the mind of a soldier if he was in that situation. Through Henry's eyes we see that some soldiers are panicking while others are getting wounded. Henry also hears cannon and musketry booming over everything else and he wonders how anyone can manage to stand such an environment. When these noises start to die off it is then that everyone realizes someone was seriously injured.
5. The purpose of the writer's actions during the Chancellorsville battle was to describe the events that took place during one battle. The writer describes the actions of a handful of regiments that resulted in them holding back the enemy and not allowing any to pass through. The writer states the battalions that fought together to win the battle and writes that his actions were also appreciated.
6. Crane's purpose of writing the passage is to inform the reader about the struggles a soldier has during war. He describes a battle scene well with using vivid imagery to set the mood. He describes there being thick smoke broken up and slashed into only by the flashes of muzzle fire. He describes scenes of soldiers yelling and screaming along with cannon and musket fire. He shows how crazy and how horrible a battle can
