I was blessed to be a part of convocation this past Friday, November 6, 2015. The presentation was at 10:00am in Butler Auditorium on the topic of “The Beauty of the Catholic Catechism through the Eyes of a Protestant.” I chose this convocation as soon as I saw the sign advertising it because I have been intrigued by the catechism since I began my journey at the University of Mary. I was raised in a Christian home however my experience in Christ’s church was through the eyes of a protestant denomination- the Churches of Christ. Catholicism has always been such a mystery to me. Since moving to North Dakota I have met more Catholics than anywhere else I’ve lived in the United States. And attending a Catholic university has made it an even more relevant topic for me to study. Her background as a Presbyterian and author both appealed to me because I am both protestant and a writer. Her sincere respect for the catechism paired well with an honest examination of the differing theologies between Protestantism and Catholicism. Ultimately though, she chose not to focus on the differences, but in the similarities we inevitably share. Both bodies are pursing relationship with Christ. Both desire to be the bride of Christ. Both seek the face of God through salvation in Jesus. Both seek the will of God through prayer. Mrs. Nystrom was able to strike a chord that played for not just believers, but for pagans and agnostics as well. The sheer beauty and earnest desire for peace laid out in the catechism will bless any person who dares to read its 700+
