Children’s books should incorporate all different lifestyles to portray the beauty of race, gender, culture, and diversity in the world. By incorporating all these different lifestyles, educators are informing and sharing with children the diversity of the world around them. Children’s literature has the power to broaden students’ perspectives on history, race, culture, and more. A current controversial trend we are currently facing with children’s books is the book ban on underrepresented and minority people and cultures. Three specific laws have been set in place with this mindset to protect students. The Individual Freedom (Stop Woke) Act, Parental Rights in Education (Don't Say Gay Bill), and Curriculum Transparency. These laws explain that certain curriculum constitutes discrimination based on race, color, sex, or national origin. Critical race theory addresses that racism is a part of everyday life, and many believe educating students on this fact fuels the idea of racism and makes many feel uncomfortable. These laws also address that parents have the right to be informed of what their child is learning. The pro of banning books is that it addresses the parent’s concerns about what their child learns in school. Parents have the right to be informed about what their child is exposed to in school. Parents should be involved in their child’s education and be able to monitor if what they are reading is appropriate. All parents raise their children differently based on their background or religion, so they each have their views about what is acceptable. Addressing parents’ concerns with issues, including critical race theory, is vital to maintaining a healthy relationship between parents and the school to provide a healthy learning environment for the students. Another pro of banning books is that it protects children from being exposed to violent literature that could affect them mentally or emotionally. By banning these books, children are not exposed to violence or inappropriate topics in school. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Exposure to violence in media, including books, can impact kids by making them act aggressively and desensitizing them to violence.” (ProCon 1). Teachers and parents would like to shelter students from the harsh realities of the world around them and maintain the students’ innocence.
