Joseph was a man of favor. His favor from God aided in him acquiring favor in every situation that he was placed in. Joseph’s time in prison was an example of that. A general summary of the story is, that God gives Joseph a gift of interpreting dreams and some of the prisoners request it. Joseph tries to use this gift as a way to get out of the prison. The way the Bible and the Qur’an speak to this time in joseph’s life is very similar. In significant ways, the stories are also very different. The details of the story are big differences as they change the meaning or message of the story. These details also point out the way that the Qur’an interprets the Bible.
One of the differences between the two stories is that the Bible places titles on the 2 prisoners that Joseph encounter. (40:5) This can be attributed to the fact that the Bible is seen more as a narrative. This detail adds to the story element of the Bible. The Qur’an inserts God a lot more than the bible and this allows for the feeling that God is always there. Joseph speaks of God in a way that is not in the Bible. It could be considered a speech he gives before he interprets the dreams. (12:37-40) Joseph takes a moment to preach to these men before he does anything else. The Qur’an also removes many details that make it a very black and white type of story. The Qur’an removes the details to separate itself from the story or narrative feel that the Bible has.
