Colombia balked at the agreements which led to the United states giving support and agreements with the Panamanian Revolution. The revolution came with not only money from the United States but also a Navel blockade stopping all Colombian troops from entering or landing in Panama (Sidney Milkas).
Before the building of the Panama Canal Ships would have to make the extremely long trek around the southern tip of South America, Cape Horn, if they wanted to go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, and vice versa. The building of the canal would reduce the time spent significantly for shipping goods across the two oceans. However, the building of the canal would not end up being an easy project. There were many difficulties when building the canal. The biggest difficulty of the all however, was keeping workers motivated and healthy.
When America went to war against Spain in the Spanish-American War, American ships in the Pacific had to sail all the way around the tip of South America in order to join the United States’ fleet off the coast of Cuba. The USS Oregon in 1898, which was traveling from the Philippines to reload the Americans to continue fighting the Spanish in Cuba, took sixty-nine days to redeploy. It would have taken only twenty-nine days if there was a Panama Canal at that time. The Panama Canal would have been extremely helpful at times like these. For example, the Panama Canal, benefits with trade because it limits trade and dangerous travels. The Panama canal allows ships and boats to pass through Panama, instead of having to go around South America, making trade for less possible and dangerous. It takes approximately eight hours to go through the Panama Canal, while going around South America would take about four months before the Panama Canal.
The Panama Canal is known to be one of the many world wonders that was created by man. Before the completion of the canal mail took a long time to be delivered because there were no good routes. After the canal was built mail traveled much faster which made America seem smaller. The canal helped create new commercial lifestyle. Towns that the canal was being built in saw an economic boom because people started building their business near the canal because they knew that tourists would see it on when passing by on the canal. The canal made money on its own that helped pay the debt that it created by putting taxes on the goods that passed through it, and by 1837 the entire loan taken out for the canal was paid back.
Cargo ships and other specialized ships traveled cross the Canal every year. Commonly passing ships quantum carriers that carrier's grain, ore, and liquids along with; automobile carriers; containers ships; tanker; liquid gas carriers and also passenger liners. This canal is also used to by many naval vessels, bring up, fishing boats, barges along with ocean going tugs. These purposes are good of building the Panama Canal, it helps a lot of people and companies.
