The Erie Canal played an enormous part in the economic growth in the United States. The Canal helped to cause an increase in industry along the Hudson River. Now, commercial vessels could travel all the way from the Hudson River to Lake Erie (Doc. 1A). This meant that they could bring goods to the people that couldn’t normally get them, because they were too expensive, or they had no way to get to them. Thousands of settlers began to utilize the Erie Canal to move west (OI).
The United States wanted to build it through Columbia. But, Columbia refused and said”No. ” We had to wait for panama to be independent. So,They became independent to us(United States).In order for the workers to accomplish The Panama Canal they needed to get past the obstacles getting in the way. After the first year people started dying.
The construction began in 1817 and ended in 1825 but it wasn't easy. Workers only used shovels, hoes and their hands to build the canal. The construction involved thousands and thousands of workers including local farmers, foreign immigrants, and New England migrants. It was very tough to work. Working conditions were at best boring and dull and at worst death like.

President Roosevelt and also congress negotiated with Britian for the support on the American controlled canal (Sidney Milkas). With the land, United States senate was able to negotiate a with Colombia route through Panama. Colombia balked at the agreements which led to the United states giving support and agreements with the Panamanian Revolution. The revolution came with not only money from the United States but also a Navel blockade stopping all Colombian troops from entering or landing in Panama (Sidney Milkas).
Before the building of the Panama Canal Ships would have to make the extremely long trek around the southern tip of South America, Cape Horn, if they wanted to go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, and vice versa. The building of the canal would reduce the time spent significantly for shipping goods across the two oceans. However, the building of the canal would not end up being an easy project. There were many difficulties when building the canal. The biggest difficulty of the all however, was keeping workers motivated and healthy.
The Panama Canal also showed off America’s power. France had once tried to build a canal though Panama, but their idea was to make a sea level canal. They broke ground on January 1, 1880. However, due to the extreme amount of dirt being carved out to make the sea level canal, storms would wash mud right back down into the canal. The constant work in response to these storms was expensive and time consuming.
Canals made trade and travel extremely nearly effortless for the time. A canal is a passage for ships or boats. For example, the Panama Canal, benefits with trade because it limits trade and dangerous travels. The Panama canal allows ships and boats to pass through Panama, instead of having to go around South America, making trade for less possible and dangerous. It takes approximately eight hours to go through the Panama Canal, while going around South America would take about four months before the Panama Canal.
