This made the economy sky rocket and allowed tons of jobs to be available for lower class Americans and immigrants. Although the pay was low, the businesses and industries were growing, and farmers were not doing so well. As a result, the younger generation who did live on farms, moved into the more industrial areas in hopes a better work. Families also moved from farmland into the more industrial areas and put their children in school or began working them young and put them in factories to help provide for the families. The conditions in these factories were awful and the rise of child labor conditions began to need a change.
Before the industrial revolution two there were two major classes: the nobles and the peasant. Nobles gained most of their wealth through inheritance while peasant worked the land given to them by the nobles. The peasants were forced to give up most of their harvest to the nobles in order to pay for their land. During the industrial revolution two new classes emerged the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie was the middle class and the proletariat was the working class.

As industry exponentially grew after the Civil War, the need for labor and materials to power newly-created manufacturing giants caused new social classes to form: the rich corporation owners and the poor laborers. Unfathomably rich Robber Barons, or plutocratic American Capitalists, dominated the economy and industry and profited from the slave-like work of millions of poor laborers during this time period. Moreover, the poor working class and the rich further divided by distribution of wealth. Therefore, exploitation of capitalism widened the gap between the rich and poor classes of America, and both newly-formed classes developed reasons for the change.

From 1790 to the late 1800’s, the Industrial Revolution recreated industry as Europe knew it with ground-breaking inventions and mass-producing factories. The Industrial Revolution widened the social gap with the bourgeoisie on a pedestal and the proletariat baring the weight of being the work class that would make the Industrial Revolution happen; this strife would lead to many riots and revolutions across Europe as many men like Karl Marx would develop solutions to the proletarian’s problems such as communism. The question arose of how the proletariat were to rebel against the bourgeoisie. The fact was that a revolution was inevitable.
As the lowest in the social hierarchy, serfs, one of the two classes of the peasantry, were also an integral part of feudal society. Serfs agreed to serve the lord because what they received in exchange fulfilled their needs. It was dangerous for them to live alone in the countryside where bandits could kill, attack, and steal (Ahlin 1). Peasants who could not defend themselves agreed to become serfs in return for the protection provided by the lord, which allowed them to live behind his walls in safety (Ahlin 1). In addition to this military protection they received legal protection and the right to draw water from the lord’s rivers, cut trees from his forest, and use the pastures (Nardo 25).
The Industrial Revolution was the beginning of a new world for all of society. The Industrial Revolution first took place in England and then spread rapidly having a tremendous impact culturally and socially, the impacts were influenced by the use of machines, new sources of power, and new organizational methods to mass produce goods. Before the Revolution, most people used hand tools and relied upon human and animal muscle for power. Pre- industrial artisans workshops were not always separated from their home which meant their was not always separation between home and work. The first class were the bourgeoisie, which Marx described as the sole owners of the means of production as well as the media. Now skilled labor became a commodity in the market place, and it suffered when the factory system arose. The Western Heritage states, “In the process of becoming wage laborers, artisans gradually lost both significant ownership of the means of production, such as tools and equipment, and of control over the conduct of their own trades.” Instead of the monarchy controlling businesses and the aristocrats, now the middle classes or those that could run factories controlled businesses and turned them into a big profit.
According to Edwards et al. (2006) Marx thought that within capitalism there would be an increased divide between the bourgeoisie class and the proletariat class in the future. The proletariats are lower of the two classes, the people who have to work for wages in order to survive. The bourgeoisie are the people in society who controlled and owned the means of production in a capitalist system.
