The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind is a biography and an autobiography written by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. The story takes place in Malawi, Africa in the late 1900’s and the early 2000’s. This book is about William Kamkwamba and everything he has gone through. William and his family have gone through starvation, and sickness, and poverty. Through it all, William still strived to reach his goals. He did everything to be able to stay in school, and when he couldn’t stay in school, he went to the library to read. With time and perseverance, he was able to achieve his goals and help his family. As he grew up he learned. He learned about science and that magic can’t beat it. William attended primary school where he took multiple exams in hopes of doing well to make it to hs dream school, Kasungu. He found out his grades weren’t good enough and was forced to go to Kachokolo, one of the worst schools in the district. Eventually, the fees for the school were due and WIlliam’s father couldn't afford them so he was forced to leave. On page 132, William’s father said, “You know our problems here, son we have nothing.” However, this doesn’t stop William from furthering his education. He goes to the library funded by the American Government. He can’t read most of the books because they’re in english and this still doesn’t stop him. He finds books that teach him about electricity through pictures and on page 167, he finds the book using energy, which is the book that teaches him how to build the windmill. William realized he could create a form of light through electricity that didn’t burn kerosene or his throat. To get this power he needs to build a windmill, but before he can build the real thing he has to build a model. Geoffrey comes over and helps him build the model. When the model is successful William knows he needs to make the real thing. The whole time his country is going through a major famine and is starving. After the famine, Williams family
