The Busy “Bee” The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a humorous musical, which involves the struggles of adolescence and the obstacles they face, which they portray with exaggeration. The playwright, Marissa Sheiness also emphasizes the diversity of each character by making them stand out with stereotypes. I had the opportunity to see this ludicrous play the 22nd of August 2014 in the UCF Theatre Department. The Director, Be Boyd did a remarkable reproduction of the original play, which is why the audience was so enthusiastic. This play is a mirroring image of our youth that portrays each individual’s curiosity that is accompanied with stress and family problems.
I truly enjoyed this musical due to its high jinx and humorous touch. I also loved how in certain scenes, the characters did their own thing at their own time. This was a great way to distinguish each characters personality. The singing and acting of the characters was impressive and emotional, which made me bond with the actors. They had a full flood of energy that kept the audience entertained throughout the whole play. …show more content…

The Farm is known for its interest in improvisation (UCF Theatre). This musical, which includes lyrics that were written by William Finn won a Tony Award (ABC Newsletter). The setting of the Spelling Bee is at a middle school situated in Putnam County (Triangle Arts and Entertainment RSS.). This play shows the different struggles that adolescents go through, however, these are portrayed with several hyperboles to make it humorous. This musical has made it to Broadway in 2005, which was directed by James Lapine (Daily Express Theatre RSS.). The audience due to its comedic, yet serious interpretation of our youth loves the 25th Annual Spelling
