The Navajo sandstone is from the early Jurassic period, which lasted from 1.2 to 950 billion years ago. (The Navajo Sandstone, 2010 ) The Oriskany sandstone is from the Devonian period which lasted from 416 to 358 million years ago. The main depositional environment of the Oriskany sandstone ranges from shallow to deeper subtidal to near shore shallow water and beach face environments.
Greek Creation Myth: Canis Major was often represented as a dog 'following' the constellation known as Orion the Hunter. In Greek mythology, Canis Major was associated with the fastest dog in the world, Laelaps, who was destined to catch anything it pursued. Laelaps was given to Europa as a present from Zeus, as well as a javelin that couldn't miss. Europa's husband Cephalus accidentally killed Europa with this javelin and so took Laelaps to a Greek province north of Athens, known as Thebes, to catch a fox that was causing trouble. However, the fox was destined never to be caught and so the chase between Laelaps and the fox seemed to be never ending.
For about 10 million years, the archelon was around. Paleontologists think that the fossils were from 75-65 million years ago (Gale Research). In addition, it took place in the late cretaceous period, in the Mesozoic Era (Mckenna). Another thing, paleontologist said they found some fossils throughout Wyoming, South Dakota, and Kansas here in America (Mckenna). The fossils of the archelon show that they had long finger-like bones that held the legs and arms up.
A historical myth, as described in class, is the story, that creates a narrative to make a group identity or to mark a geographic location. With this definition in mind, it is easy to place the region of Appalachia in a category as one with multiple historical myths surrounding its politics, technology, economic systems, population, and much more. After learning some of the rich history of the region, it is apparent some of the myths have failed to capture how the region and its complex history and has changed over time. One of the five most recognized myths, which fails to capture the complexity of Appalachian history as discussed in class is “Appalachia is all white and the whitest place in the Unites States.” This myth has failed to capture
Ted Bundy is one of the most known serial killers in the United States. Ted uses his charismatic face and charm to lure his victims in. One reason Ted Bundy never got caught was because he did not fit the profile. He was not the typical face when someone thinks of a serial killer. Ted was eventually executed by an electric chair.
The Earth's climate went through several major changes throughout the Tertiary period that led to the flourishing of primate species and the extinction of other primate species. The plesiadaptiforms, which are not considered real primates because of the lack of key primate features, went extinct at the end of the Paleocene epoch. At the beginning of the Eocene epoch came the euprimates, considered the first real primates, whose features made them well-adapted to arboreal life. Euprimates had convergent eye orbits, opposable digits, nails, and larger brains than plesiadaptiforms. This coincides with a period of global warming which made for a more tropical and forested habitat.
I have decided to research the Greek monster Typhon, the monster that managed to over throw Zeus, king of the gods. Typhon was the last child of Gaea and Tartarus, he had a hundred serpent heads that spat on his shoulders, he could shoot fire from his eyes, Typhon was so tall that his head brushed the stars, he had huge snake coils instead of legs, and he had many wings on his body. Typhon was married to Echidna, whom gave birth to Orathus, Cerberus, and the Lernaean Hydra. After Zeus defeated Typhon, in their second battle, Typhon was imprisoned under a mountain where he would spew fire and shake the earth in attempts to escape. The next monster I researched was the Wendigo, a human that was possessed by an evil spirit of cannibalism.
Like in the story of the Buddha where his life is told in many phases, Hesiod tells of the Myth of the Ages. Beginning with the Golden Age: Men of this time never had to work and were always cared for. The men of this time never aged, and when they died they went to sleep. When this age came to an end, its population became guardians of mankind, protecting them from evils and granting them with much wealth. The Silver Age was worse than the Golden, both in body and mind.
The Greek mythology of Cancer the Crab is simply a family mess. It is hard to imagine that the mighty family of Zeus could be so dysfunctional, but there you have it. The story begins with Zeus having an affair with Alcmene, the queen of Tiryns. The result of this union was the Heracles (the Romans named him our familiar Hercules), the most famous Greek Hero. Of course, this union and offspring did not go over too well with Hera, the wife of Zeus.
In Ancient Greek Myths, there are many monsters, but one of the most fearsome is the Cyclops. This diabolical monster has one eye and is known for being simple and sometimes being cannibalistic. They were also known as the son of the Titans named Uranus and Gaea. Uranus hated his children and Gaea plotted against Uranus because of this unnatural hate. These hideous monsters terrorized the world with their abnormal horrifying eye and their giant look that they had.
Next over a long span of time the uplift, erosion, and glaciation of the rocks formed the landscape we see today. It all started when large amounts of sand and mud eroded from ancient
Chapter 25: The History of Life on Earth Concept 25.2 – The fossil record documents the history of life • The fossil record is what gives us access to a view of what the world was like long ago o We have a sight of how life has evolved over the course of billions of years A. The Fossil Record • Fossils are primarily found in sedimentary rock • Strata are sedimentary rock layers in which fossils have amassed o The fossil record is based on the sequence of this • There are also other types of fossils o Amber and ice • The fossil record is evidence of the changes, as well as the differences between, Earth’s organisms throughout time • The fossil record is extremely important, however it doesn’t completely explain evolutionary change • The fossil
Before the creation of man, Titans and mythical creatures roamed the vast lands of the planet known today as Earth. The gods and these beings lived in harmony until an argument erupted between the Titans and their children. It began in the month of August during the dog days of summer, it was a peaceful afternoon, and the gods were in the throne room of Mount Olympus. It was abrupted by the god Hermes who had received a letter stating that an act of war was proclaimed upon them by the Titans. Out of Zeus’ uncontrollable rage, a creation of himself materialized out of his mind and into the center of the room in a blazing inferno.
Creation stories are tales and myths that were told from all around the world, in which was believed by each individual culture to be true on how the universe first came about. According to the Zuni emergence tale, the Pueblos believed that they were created like seeds growing from within Mother Earth. They practiced animism, the belief that living spirits are a part of all forces of nature. Like most Neolithic peoples, the Pueblos also practiced anthropomorphism, the belief that deities and animals also have characteristics and behaviors of a human being. They believed that humans are capable of communicating with these natural phenomena.
Legends have surfaced in hundreds of cultures throughout the world that tell of a huge, catastrophic flood that destroyed most of man kind and was survived only by a few individuals and animals. Although most historians that have studied this matter, estimate these legends number in the two hundreds, other subject matter experts claim the number to be as great as five hundred accounts of the flood through out the world. There have been approximately two hundred flood myths found in the world. The similarity between much of their content is equally amazing. In addition, these stories have been found on every inhabited continent.
