Through out this semester as a class we have learned about the different types of cultures from North Africa all the way to the Polynesia culture. We leaned about their functions, histories, traditions and more. Three cultures and their objects stood out the most to me and they were the Asante Kente Cloth from West Africa Ghana. The Cameroon Grassfield in Central Africa and the Massai people from Eastern Africa.

The Asante people in Ghana West Africa were the most powerful in the Akan state. They dominated most of central and southern Ghana from the late seventeen century to its defeat by the British in 1896. As well as what gender gets to wear these Kentes. The most recent Kentes are made of cottons. The Kente is also restricts to royalty in the past and present. The Kente is made up of many colors, but the most common colors are red, green, blue, and gold. The green represents spiritual growth the blue represents tranquility and the gold represents royalty.

The Cameroon Grassfield, are two prominent kingdoms one at the Bamun at the Foumban and the Bamilike at the Bandjoum located in the center of the capitals of the king’s palace. Things like material wealth and art are seen as ways of social stability and economic well being of a Grassfield kingdom. Like many other high societies the Grassfield palace includes a treasury that functions for a rich assortment of artistic objects. For example, royal status, special cloths, elaborates gowns, caps, pipes, drinking horns and wooden stools to show power and ranking.

Grassfield kingdoms perform masquerades owned and danced men’s regulatory association, large lineages and princes. Grassfield regulatory association masquerade supporting and enforcing royal power appear at major palace festivals (Pg.
