Introduction
Marilyn Carlson Nelson, who is the CEO of the Carlson Company, which is a renowned travel and accommodation agency, faces a problematic dilemma. The Carlson Company is aiming to launch a luxury hotel into a lucrative market in Papagayo, Costa Rica. The company however, signed the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism and Papagayo, is known for its child trafficking. The company must decide whether it is possible to build a hotel in Papagayo without violating their code of conduct. If they choose to go forth with the project, they have to ensure that their execution correlates with the purpose of the project and that they do their duty as a participant to eradicate the practice in the area and maintain a healthy public image.

As the table below shows, the Carlson Company demonstrates multiple stages of Corporate Citizenship with an emphasis for stage 4 and 5. For citizenship content, the company demonstrates many philanthropic qualities such as being committed to serving the community. The Carlson Company is philanthropic in its’ endeavors but lacks the organizational management and sustainability to advance in citizenship content. This can largely be attributed to being in such an unpredictable market with various stakeholders at any given time. As for strategic intent, the company isn’t creating a market, but does look to expand in markets that are still up and coming, like Costa Rica for example. Leadership is also solid in that the owners and executive board really seem to genuinely care that they have a good practice, they are head and shoulders above other leadership in other industries because of this.
