Cody Ostermiller 10-30-17 Block 1 The Cask of Amontillado Essay In “The Cask of Amontillado”, written by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe has a very distinct mood. Poe’s mood of his writing in this story is very suspenseful. He portrays this mood throughout the whole story obviously, but there are specific points in the story where the mood was very suspenseful that had you really wondering what what would happen next. These points in the story being when Montresor and Fortunato entered the catacomb, when they were approaching the vaults in the catacomb, and when Montresor chains Fortunato the the wall. Clearly, when Montresor leads Fortunato the the beginning of the catacomb, it is hard to tell exactly what will happen next. Montresor says to Fortunato, "My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre." So, Montresor is basically saying that the catacomb itself is a little skeptical to go in because it’s a pretty creepy environment. But if you remember in the first paragraph of “The Cask of Amontillado”, it reads, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.” After reading this, it is possible that Montresor is trying to manipulate or trick …show more content…
Montresor chains Fortunato to a wall in a niche! “Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist. Withdrawing the key I stepped back from the recess.” So, what on Earth is Montresor going to do to Fortunato while he is chained to the wall? This has to by far be the most suspenseful moment throughout the whole story because there are so many different things that could happen to Fortunato and Poe will make us read more to find
