Youth homelessness. In Canada this is becoming more than an issue, it's becoming a crisis. Every night thousands of Canadians between the ages of 16-24 struggle to survive. In a year around 200,000 Canadians experience homelessness, and youth between the ages of 16-24 make up 20% of that huge number.
Homelessness is not a new issue as it has already existed for many years ago and the existence of homeless people is often being ignored. The reasons why they end up sleeping on the streets is largely because of individual factors (Main, 1998), which is contributed by structural factors (Cyndy Baskina, 2007). It is unsure whether homeless people choose to end their lives in this way or are among the victims of situations? Untreated mental illness is dangerous and over time we have learned that locking people with a mental illness is not the solution but makes it worse. People with untreated mental illness face many consequences. “People with untreated psychiatric illnesses comprise 250,000 people, of the total homeless population” (mentalillnesspolicy.org). The quality of life for these individuals is extremely heart breaking, and many are victimized regularly.
Youth homelessness in Canada is not a new phenomenal, it has become more and more severe over the past 20 years. “One third of homeless individuals on the streets are under the age of 25”(Cino, Rose). It is a significant social justice issue in Canada. Within our community people are increasingly aware of the sight of youth sleeping in parks, asking for money and sitting on sidewalks. Youth homelessness is caused by tragic life occurrences such as abuse, illness or unemployment, while many falsely assume homelessness is a choice.

Homelessness is a public health issue that has negative impacts on the physical and mental health of individuals. Homeless individuals are at higher risk of developing chronic diseases, mental health disorders, and substance abuse problems. Therefore, addressing homelessness is critical for promoting health and well-being.
Many people believe that it is not easy for homeless people to restart their lives and have a job. Because homeless people may have drug or alcohol problems, which make it very difficult to have a long-term job. As a result, they cannot makes enough income to support themselves. Homelessness is a very serious complex issue to which there are no simple solutions. Moreover, the young adults have the highest risk of becoming homeless in today word (Paulsen, 2007).
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 20 to 25% of the homeless population in United States suffers from a form of severe mental illness (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). Mental illness is the third largest cause of homelessness for single adults. (National Coalition for the Homeless). People with mental illness who become homeless lack both proper medications for the illness and suffer from extreme psychological problems. It is often a challenge hosting and caring for individuals with mental illness because they suffer from mental issues such as delusions and bizarre conduct.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.

Homelessness is one of the most serious, yet underestimated, issues America is facing today. It affects more than hundreds of thousand people each day and almost 5 million people annually. As the time passes, the number of homeless people keeps increasing due to the poorly functioning economy and diminishing help from those who are able to easily assist them. I believe that we should organize a day, in which we would help those people in need.

One problem I think would be fantastic if I or anyone could solve is homelessness. Everyone deserves a home and it is quite sad that there are so many who don’t have one. The reason this is one problem that is significant to me is because there have been a few times where my family and I had nearly lost our home. Just the thought of it terrified me, I can’t imagine what it would be like to completely lose my home. I want people to have a safe and clean place to live, some place where they can lead happy lives with a roof over their head.
No Poverty, Zero Hunger and Good Health and Well-Being are three of the Global Goals that world leaders set in 2015 and hoped to achieve by 2030. Progress is being made in certain areas but that doesn 't mean these things are true for the millions of homeless people around the world. Homeless people do not have fixed, secure, safe homes or fixed places to sleep in, and so they typically live in the streets. The homeless can also include people spending nights in homeless shelters, abandoned buildings, etc. Lack of housing means lack of income which usually means lack of food, so these people often do not know where or how to buy their next meal.
