Bashar Al- Assad, Syria’s president, has restricted freedom of speech in Syria during his time as leader and oppressed the Syrian people. Pro-democratic ‘peaceful’ protests began taking place in Syria around March 2011. However, with the repressive system Assad lead, protests would not last long. Security opened fire on the demonstrators and killed several, which eventually created a large uproar. Some protesters got together to create the Free Syrian Army, or the official Rebels. For that purpose, it becomes a burden for the international community to carry the consequences of pursuing national interests. In Canada, affordable housing is very scarce and homelessness is pressing issue and so how can a good quality of life be ensured for Syrian refugees?
