In the essay titled “Police Brutality”, Danna Hernandez uses rhetorical devices to declare that police brutality is dreadful. She utilizes anecdotes to support her claim, pathos to persuade the audience to agree with her argument by producing an emotional response, and imagery to illustrate her hardships caused by police brutality. Danna does this in order to make the general public realize that police brutality is a significant issue that should not be treated as a trend. Danna Hernandez uses anecdote to support her argument. The vast majority of the essay is an anecdote that tells of the tragic death of her son due to unjustified gun usage by a police officer(which constitutes as police brutality) and the emotional consequences that followed.
In the article, “How Police Training Contributes to Avoidable Deaths” author Seth Stoughton shares his experience as a previous police officer as well of the experiences of others and states how the training of police officers “is part of the problem” (Stoughton 2014, pg.2) with police violence of present day. Police are trained to respond to every situation with the mentality of encountering a dangerous situation, and that hesitation can end up deadly for the officer (Stoughton 2014, pg.3). Police are also trained to be afraid (Stoughton 2014, pg.3). They are shown videos where officers are killed but aren’t given the chances of an civilian to officer violent interaction happening, which have gone down in the past years (Stoughton 2014, pg.5).
Death is an inevitable destination for living species. It is something we all have to face, to accept, and even to embrace. However, what if you are just waiting for death to come? Hooked up to countless machines, John Wallace wanted to speed up his process of dying. He is a 72-years-old man suffering from metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Research Project: Rodney King Police brutality has been a major problem for many years, especially for those of the minority community. Minorities have been endangered to forcefulness by police for too long. Police brutality has been more relevant in recent years due to certain cases that have proved to be of life-threatening violence, such as the beating of Rodney King. The episode that had happened to Rodney King is a terrible one, but one that perfectly reflects what law enforcement is capable of doing. In order to fully understand police brutality and its probable causes, we have to bring up the case of Rodney King.
After successfully reading the “officer-involved shootings” there are some opinions I have about some of the police situations. The situations the police have been in are dangerous and could be deadly at some time. They could also be safe and not deadly. Some of the facts that they gave us are still unknown but they are working on finding them out. They are providing the best knowledge they can give us so that we can make the law enforcement better than it is now.
Holding Police Accountable for their Killings of Unarmed People of Color Fruitvale Bart Station is where I begin and end my day. The infamous platform in Oakland, California where bart police murdered Oscar Grant, a fully restrained unarmed African American who was celebrating New Year 's Day with his friends and girlfriend. Johannes Mehserle, the police officer involved in the shooting was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Thus, having to spend the minimum two years in prison but being he had time served he only would only spend seven months in jail with possible bail. Murder?
Although we hope our Police force will use their powers for good, but sometimes police misconduct can occur. Often, the police are under great pressure to act as quick as possible, espcially in a murder case and if the murder victime is white, a child, police officer, or prominent. For example, In the 1990’s the case of Rodney King, that not only shows a racist issue within the criminal justice system, but also the issue with abuse from police officers, but changed the country’s views on the LA police force. Twenty- Seven years ago,Rodney King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers.
Fatal Police Shootings “27 percent of African Americans are killed by the law enforcement” (Cooke 1) most of these are from fatal police shootings. Fatal police shootings have become an epidemic. The majorities of fatal police shootings are justified as homicides or have not been fully investigated. Plenty of cases have been closed due to false accusations. The turning point occurred when Martin Luther King Jr., Rodney King and many more were brutality beaten and or killed by police officers.
Geoffrey P. Albert of the University of South Carolina, Griffith University focuses his essay, “Toward a National Database of Officer-Involved Shootings”, on the lack of a trustworthy database to keep track of such events like officer involved shootings. In regards to police involved shootings, an initial problem continues to be the fact that reporting these cases is optional for a department. With that being said, it is often that departments fail to formally report these shootings. Which then provides for inaccuracy when trying to determine an average number of shootings. His work is much needed in the police department society especially because they are in desperate need of an accurate and consistent way to record the data the erupts behind
There is a belief among some people that racist white police officers are hunting down innocent black men(Bandler, 2016). But thanks to a series of numbers brought to our eyes by the hand of a Heather Mac Donald, statistics from 2015 show that cops kill almost twice as many white people as black people (Mac Donald, 2016). On top of these statistics, the majority of the black victims were handling some kind of deadly weapon(Bandler, 2016). This does have a direct correlation with the amount of force used within the police force simply because of judgement and the way an intense time could alter the way people think or feel about specific situations(Bandler, 2016). Today, these specific situations almost seem like any traffic stop or crime confrontation(Bandler, 2016).
Laws are created to establish a sense of order in any civil society, however how far will we go to make sure these laws are enforced? Police militarization is a silent but growing concern in our nation as officers around the country receive new and unnecessary equipment to combat crime. Although it can be considered a good attribute for our officers to have new equipment such as upgraded weapons and armor, materials such as tanks are not needed in a suburban neighborhood. the police mindset has changed to that of a soldier fighting a war and trying to survive in a domestic war. Furthermore crowd control today in modern day society makes our officers appear as oppressive tyrants rather than our everyday protectors.
Brianna Marquez English III - 5th period May 22, 2018 Being bad & getting exposed Police brutality and the system being corrupt has always been an issue in America, but lately it’s been brought up more and more in the media. The system hasn 't always revealed the full truth about stories, but now with technology it has become a concern that the police are covering up things that we should know.
