Abigail Colvin Mr. Sanders Chemistry II 12 May 2016 The Chemy Called Al Introduction Chemistry is the study of matter and its properties. Even though the term chemistry has not always existed, chemistry has always been a part of life and is essential to life. By understanding the basics of chemistry, many discoveries and inventions have been made that improve life. In the novel, The Chemy Called Al, Wendy Isdell uses fictional characters, places and events to give readers an understanding of basic chemistry concepts. The main fictional characters of the book include a human girl named Julie, who is transported through space and time. Al Chemy-lion is a mysterious lion who has been in the land of Science for a very long time. The Periodics …show more content…

The periodic table is a basic concept of chemistry used to list and group elements. In a periodic table, chemical elements are arranged horizontally by increasing atomic number and vertically according to their chemical property similarities. No two elements are the same. Each element is unique. The Periodics as described by Isdell represent the elements of the periodic table. Each supernatural, equine Periodic is described differently and no two are described the same way. Each Periodic is different just like each element of the periodic table is unique. Isdell uses physical characteristics of individual elements, such as color, mass and weight, as well as chemical characteristics of individual elements, such as boiling point and melting point, to describe the corresponding Periodic in the book. As Julie journeys through the Elemental Forest, she meets groups of Periodics. Typically these are Periodics that represent groups of elements that are similar but not the same. This represents how elements are arranged vertically in the periodic table according to the similar chemical properties. Periodics that are similar might be together in a group like elements arranged vertically are similar but still different and …show more content…

Isdell shows this concept through the description and location of The Chemistree in the Elemental Forest. “In the center (of the Elemental Forest) was the largest, oldest tree she had ever seen. The Chemistree, Original Progenitor of All Modern Species..parent of all other. (Isdell 43-44).” Key Idea 5 Chemistry has a very strong and old foundation, but it continues to grow and expand. New elements continue to be added to the periodic table as science knowledge increases. In January of 2016, a news article reported elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 as approved by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. These elements completed the seventh row of the periodic table. Isdell shows the concept that chemistry continues to expand when Julie names an element in the Land of Science that did not previously exist, Wendelium with the atomic symbol Wd (Isdell, 442).
