The civil rights movement that reached its height in the 1950s and 60s began to grow and a lot of good and bad came from this time period. The main people that we tend to remember from this time period is Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks. Some of the main pieces of legislation that was passed during this time was was the 1957 and the 1963 civil rights acts also passed during this time was 1964 voting rights. The civil rights movement was not just about civil rights it also opened up another wave of the women's rights movement. The Montgomery Bus Boycott took place after Rosa Parks got on a bus in 1955 and sat in a white persons seat when a white male got on the bus and she refused to get up and move to the back of the bus she was then arrested and charged and placed in jail. After this happened an eleven month long boycott of the Montgomery Bus system took place. The boycott ended after the Supreme court ruled that segregation on busses was illegal as well. Locally there was also some protesting going on most known is the Greensboro Sit-in which consisted of four African American college students who went into a restaurant and sat at the bar that was exclusively for white people and refused to leave until they was served. During the time of them sitting there they was assaulted, called names, spit on, and much more, however during all of that going on they remained peaceful and did not fight back. This helped push the civil rights movement even more getting more people to help support it and bring more attention to the problem. Another way of bringing attention to the matter was when college students got on busses and was making their way down South and the buses was stopped and members of the KKK set fire to the buses and tear gas and much more and as the students fled the bus they was beaten. The voting rights act of 1964 made it illegal for states to try to stop anyone from voting, since states was trying to stop African Americans from voting through tests and other things to make it harder for them to be able to vote in elections.
