In 1959, Social psychologists John R. P. French and Bertram H. Raven, the five source of power of which a person gets power. There are known today as French and Raven’s five bases of Power, which I have mentioned in the previous sentence. Having a good understanding of the foundation of Power is what helps us in our interaction – whether we are under someone with power or the one in power. The 5 bases of Power in brief description. 1. Legitimate Power: An individual may use “legitimate Power” as a Power to keep ones formal position safe. 2. Reward Power: Where by managers obtain compliance from employee in return for promising reward. 3. Coercive Power: To Threat someone or to make someone suffer. 4. Expert Power: Someone with valuable knowledge. 5. Referent Power: A referent power leader will ask you to do what you are supposed to do anyway. NB: Six years later, Raven added an extra Power Base: PAGE 2 Informational - results from an individual ability to influence the information others need to accomplish something.
