The Connection between Feminism and "The Lottery Ticket" After reading "The Lottery Ticket", was a story is on a middle-class family that had the potential to win the lottery. Throughout the story, we could understand how the concepts of feminism (Ex. subordination, marginalization, objectification) correlate to these female characters. For the men, the idea behind the money and a newspaper can connect to how and why Ivan was controlling his wife. To go into detail, the newspaper is used to symbolize knowledge as this would correlate to the idea of men thinking that women aren't intelligent. This small aspect of the story explains how women are in a patriarchal society that restricts women from basic things such as managing money, making executive decisions, and more. The second male symbol we must consider is Money, as it's the symbol of power. It connects to how men want to be the individuals who have more power than women, as it's perceived that men would be the individuals who would bring the income for the family. Therefore, it can explain and connect to the reason why women are being oppressed because of the power that men hold. In this story, it wasn't just an opportunity to make a lot of money for the family and/or for Masha herself, but it was a ticket to escape a patriarchal society. The reason why is because, throughout the story, we could see how Ivan kept mentioning how Masha would keep the earnings and potentially go abroad. Furthermore, we could understand the intentions of Masha, as she mentioned that she could potentially purchase an estate property. To add on, in the first couple of paragraphs when Masha found that they could win the lottery, we could also understand that this lottery ticket had brought happiness, as this could be considered a sign of Masha's freedom. But, near the end of the story, Masha couldn't win and therefore loses the opportunity to escape from his controlling husband. In short, a female symbol that's important to this story would be the lottery ticket, as it was an opportunity to leave his husband and escape from a patriarchal
