“According to the ASPCA, an animal is abused every 10 seconds in this country”(Rosenthal). Every single day many animals are being beaten, starved, and neglected by their owners. Animal cruelty is growing rapidly in today's society, and the popularity is vast among the nation. Animal abuse can be simply leaving a dog in the car while one quickly runs into the grocery store for a couple of minutes. Due to this, many commit the crime without knowing it. Others commit the crime on purpose for money, entertainment, or science research. Animal cruelty is an everyday occurring issue that can range from innocent negligence to physical abuse and newly developing laws and punishments are bringing light to examples of such occurrences.

“He was the first to plead guilty in the case involving Bad Newz Kennels, which operated from 2001 to April 2007 out of property Vick”(Gorley Chufo). He and 2 others were convicted of animal abuse and gambling which the attorney claimed “inhumane”. “Where once there was much yelling, drinking, and gambling, and a sight and smell of blood as dog flesh was viciously ripped apart, now is mostly eerie silence”(Saraceno). They pled guilty of hanging, electrocuting, and drowning the dogs who did not meet the expectations of the owners. “A line of 20 kennels looks like a string of prison cells...small scattered dog houses are chewed and mangled...a car axle...weight lifting plates...dog collars hang from the wall...oversized dog dishes made of cement…”(Saraceno). This exemplifies just a small portion of the animal cruelty Vick and others portrayed to the helpless dogs. Many say the kennel was a concentration camp for dogs. “...a concentration camp for dogs: Bad Newz Kennels”(Saraceno). Vick spent 21 months in jail which followed house arrest. Many claimed this was not “enough” punishment, but many said him not being allowed to play football was the only true punishment. “The true crime will be if he’s allowed to play football”(Saraceno).
