“Be still and know that you are God when you know that you are God you will begin to live Godhood” ("Answers to Quotes of Man Being God"). Since the beginning of time man has struggled with submitting to a deity because man believes they have more power. In the book, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, Edmond Dantes believed that he is the new God of his time. He believed he had more power than anyone else. The life of the protagonist, Edmond Dantes, parallels to the life of Christ due to the fact that they have had similar events that happened in their life. Betrayal is the first step for someone to be the Christ of their time period. Edmond Dantes as well as Jesus Christ were both betrayed by a person they called their “friend.” …show more content…

The people in the story thought that he died when we went to prison, as the thought of the wretched prisoner escaping was nearly insane. Dantes’ new identity, The Count of Monte Cristo, went back to the prisoner to find out information about himself. No one recognized him or knew that he was alive. Even the guard said “‘He died in prison, wretched and hopeless’” (Dumas 97). The guard did not even recognize him when he went back to see the guard for information about himself. Although Jesus did not die in a prison, he died on the cross when he was crucified. He was laid in a tomb where there was no possible way anyone could enter or leave the tomb. The people said that he had no more hope, just as Dantes “died” hopeless. Despite the fact Jesus did die when he had “cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit” ("Matthew 27 NIV - Judas Hangs Himself - Early in the"), he still ends up resurrecting from the dead, which proves the point he is perceived to be dead, just like Edmond Dantes. They were both thought of as dead by all of the people that they knew because one went to prison for many years and never came out, so they thought, and the other was crucified on the cross. In trying to be like Christ a person must have “the willingness to lose everything, even his very life, in a death like that of Christ” (Randall E. Otto). Jesus had a scenario like that because he first resurrected from the dead and then revealed himself to some women who recognized him as Jesus, then finally to his disciples. In order for someone to imitate another person’s actions and be like them, for example, Jesus, they must go through a process called emulation. This process is “a kind of intention replication often seen in non-human primates” (Joshua Cockayne). Although emulation requires replication seen in non-human primates, Edmond Dantes imitated Jesus by people believing that he was dead and then having a somewhat “resurrection.” His resurrection is his escapement from jail and starting a new life as a new person. Edmond Dantes revealed himself to Fernand when he said “‘One of my names is enough to strike terror into your heart, but I don’t have to tell you what it is, do I?’” (Dumas 393). Edmonds’ resurrection was the realization of him being alive. He would reveal himself to those whom he disliked the most. Jesus also had a miraculous resurrection that was similar to Edmonds’. There was a group of women who went looking for Jesus, “but when they entered they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus” ("Luke 24 NIV - Jesus Has Risen - On the First Day of"). As Jesus resurrected from the grave and became a reincarnated being, Dantes escaped from prison and came
