The Cross Race Effect

150 Words1 Pages
One such mechanism of importance within eyewitness identification is the cross-race effect (CRE), also known as the own-race bias. The cross-race effect is an effect that causes people to recognise individuals from their own race (same-race, SR) more easily than those of other races (cross-race, CR). The effect has been replicated many times as many people have tried to investigate it and what may cause it. Similar effects have also been identified such as a cross-gender effect (Shaw & Skolnick 1994) and a cross-age effect (Fulton & Bartlett, 1991), improving recognition within genders and age groups. More generally, people recognise in-group members better than out-group members (Bernstein, Young & Hugenberg, 2007 and Meissner & Brigham, 2001).
